2020 Proceed With Caution: QB
Every year I do a proceed with caution article for each Fantasy Football position. It's meant as a warning that directs you to players who have a very high chance of dropping off or being over-drafted in fantasy land. It is not meant as a pure "do not draft these guys" kind of article. If you want to go after them anyway, then at least you've been warned about what may await you. Here are my three Quarterbacks for 2020:
Deshaun Watson (Houston)
Analysis: The Texans once again failed to surround Watson with more weapons. In fact, they took his best weapon away (Hopkins) and replaced him with a cheap knock-off (no disrespect to Cooks, but he’s not even close to the talent Hopkins is). They left him with the oft-injured Will Fuller, a Running Back who hasn’t been able to come close to duplicating his only good statistical season, subpar Tight Ends, and a slew of third string Receivers (at best). Watson will still do Watson things, which is nothing short of spinning gold out of straw, but he’s setup to take a step backward statistically.
Jimmy Garoppolo (San Francisco)
Analysis: I like Deebo Samuel and George Kittle, but I’m not a fan of the Brandon Aiyuk draft pick, and I don’t see another Receiver on this roster who can be an X-factor. Garoppolo hasn’t shown that he’s the type of QB who is going to statistically dominate this league. I think he has solid, high-end QB2 value. I listed him in this article because I have a feeling he’s going to be over-drafted due to what San Fran did as a team last year. Be careful not to fall into that trap.
Jared Goff (LA Rams)
Analysis: Cooks is gone, Van Jefferson was a reach in the 2nd round, and they didn’t upgrade his O-Line at all. Two of their best weapons on offense are their Tight Ends (Higbee and Everett) but they don’t run very many two Tight End sets. Goff is setup for failure and the loaded division he plays in is only going to hurt his fantasy value more. If you want to wait and grab your backup QB in one of your last rounds then I wouldn’t knock you for taking Goff, but this is not the year to draft him as your QB1, or a high-end QB2.
