2024 Draft Board: Pass Catchers

2024 Draft Board: Pass Catchers

The below information I included in the QB draft board earlier in the week, I'm going to include it for every board, but it will be identical on each.

If you've ever read one of my draft board articles before then you have an idea of what you'll see below, but there is a slight change. If you haven't read them, quick explanation, I use stats, athletic testing, past performance from current pro players, and formulas to try and determine the chances a prospect in the current draft has at succeeding as a pro. In the past I used a "PSR", and an "A Met" and "S Met" to give every player a round grade. Now, it all comes down to a Score. The scores differ by position, so before each draft board I will put what the high score was between the 2020-2023 drafts at that position. And at the bottom you will see a small blurb I wrote up for each position.

Things worth noting:

-First, the most glaring things, Marvin Harrison Jr. is 6th. Trust me, if he had done any athletic testing at all he would've been at the top mixed in with Nabers and Odunze in some way shape or form. For example, Nabers was just above MHJ before he ran at his pro day and he shot up to first after. I'm not crazy, if I was running a team MHJ would be at the top with the other two, and if you're wondering in what order, it would be Nabers, MHJ, Odunze.

-Malik Washington ranks very high on my board. However, per PFF, he ran 83.1% of his snaps out of the Slot. Slot heavy Receivers don't get drafted that high. So, if I were running a team that ran plenty of three wide sets, I'd keep my eye on Washington and look to snag him in the 3rd/4th round range.

-This Receiver class really does appear to be absolutely loaded. There are a combined 22 Receivers with a day 1 or day 2 grade on my board. Last year there were 12, the year before that 11, and 13 in 2021 and 2020 (under this scoring system).

-The difference between Xavier Worthy (the top Day 2 WR) and Adonai Mitchell (the 8th Day 2 WR) is 3 points. I would not argue with someone if they wanted a bigger athletic Receiver like Mitchell/Pearsall over a smaller speedster like Worthy.

-Bowers is a no-brainer at the top of his position and as a top draft pick in general. That said, I really really like Sinnott too. The TE2 draft position is kind of up in the air with Ja'Tavion Sanders being the current favorite, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sinnott or Stover go before him.

-There are three Receivers that fit the mold of what I would look for in a sleeper, but I only got to watch one of them play in college, so I will go with Luke McCaffrey as my sleeper. I don't believe he's going to come in and be some franchise changing Receiver, but you can clearly see the athletic prowess and the understanding of the position. And keep in mind, he started out as a Quarterback at Nebraska before eventually moving to Receiver at Rice, so he's still developing at this position. He could be a scary playmaker for someone down the road.

-Little history lesson here, I've technically been doing this since 2020, but I back dated the original way I was doing this to the 2018 and 2019 classes in an effort to try and better the system early on. The current formulas I use were not applied to those two classes, but I explain this so when I say Day 3 and Undrafted Tight Ends on my board don't have a track record of succeeding, you see it as more than just the 2020 and 2021 classes. That's why picking a sleeper was so difficult for me. I've found players at this position that succeed are usually guys that had at least decent college production, and above average athleticism. Out of the five Day 3 Tight Ends, Jared Wiley is the only one that really fits that, so as much as I'd like to pick Tip Reiman with his somewhat freaky athleticism, I'm going to go with Wiley.
