Proceed with Caution: RB
David Montgomery: Is no one else concerned for Montgomery since Matt Nagy announced he would be taking play-calling duties back over? During the start of last season with Nagy calling plays Montgomery never eclipsed 90 yards rushing, averaged under 4 YPC in 6 out of the 9 games, and only posted 1 touchdown. His work down the stretch where he had over 90 yards rushing in 4 out of 6 games, averaged over 4 YPC in all but one of those games and managed 7 rushing touchdowns, those all came with Bill Lazor calling the shots. If you weren’t concerned about Nagy taking back over, then you probably should be.
Melvin Gordon: The Broncos drafted Javonte Williams at the top of the second round. Williams is basically a younger, shiftier version of Gordon. That means it doesn’t look good for Gordon. You could still grab him as your RB3 in the hopes that he’ll retain primary ball carrier duties for this season, but I wouldn’t go out of my way to take him early on.
Tevin Coleman: It might be tempting to snag Coleman in the mid rounds when you’re looking for your RB3, or if you like to do the zero RB draft strategy, but I’m here to deter you from doing so. Two years ago he finished in the mid-30’s out of all RBs in fantasy football. Last year he didn’t crack the top 100 because he missed half the season. In fact, he’s only ever finished a full season once in his career. And the Jets went out and drafted the very talented Michael Carter. If Coleman goes down with an injury early on, there’s no guarantee he’ll return to starter reps when he’s healthy.
