History and Explanation

My (Lance’s) dad started running a fantasy football league back in Minnesota around 1994. At that point the guys he had in the league didn’t know anything about fantasy football. So, my dad got them all together at one of the coach’s houses, they grilled hot dogs, and my dad had a massive paper board up on the side of the garage. There was one magazine that each of them passed around, they’d pick a player out of the magazine, cross the name off and hand it to the next coach. After that year it took off within the group, and by the time my dad asked if I wanted to join (2002, I was 10) most of the coaches were well established and knew what they were doing. I instantly fell in love with fantasy football and managed to get to my first third place finish two years later.

My senior year of high school (2009) was when my dad officially stopped running the league. I spent a few years doing mostly public leagues and a couple of online private leagues my friends invited me to, but then in 2013 I decided I wanted to run my own. So I got it started with friends and family from around the country and in 2014, when I got out of the Navy, I switched the league back to its roots: in-person drafts with a paper board nailed to the wall of a garage. It was a lot of fun, but after six years I was already sick of having to hassle people to pay their entry and drop and pickup fees, so I folded the league, and started this one. The drafts are no longer done on paper boards (I actually use Excel and Teams meetings so the people who can’t make it in person can still see what’s going on), but the love I have for it has not changed.

This is the Sea to Sea Dynasty League. There is no money involved, but we do play for a trophy. It started with an 18 round draft in 2019. At the end of the season they had to cut their teams down to 18 players max and all of those players stayed on their teams heading into 2020. The 2020 draft was three rounds and all rookies and free agents were draft eligible. There were a few bumps with that, which forced me to adjust how the roster trimming was handled. During the 2021 season the league voted to switch from a D/ST format to Individual Defensive Players. Each coach got to keep one defensive player from off a defense they had on their team at the end of the season. For 2022 we did our normal three round offensive rookie/free agent draft, and a separate 9-round IDP draft Scoring is half PPR. After that season the league voted to go back to the way it was, so for 2023 we had a four round draft to allow everyone to add a D/ST back to their teams. We were using a more traditional scoring system. I’ve always preferred the lower scoring systems like my dad ran back in the 90’s and 2000’s. You got 1 point for every 20 yards receiving/rushing and for every 50 yards passing. Also, 3 points for a passing touchdown not 4, and there were some subtle differences to the Kicker and defensive player scoring systems. All this allowed the league MVP race to be a lot more even (the modern scoring systems allow QBs to dominate the MVP race). However, I got regular questions from members of the league about why our scoring system was that way. So, during the 2023 season I tested the modern scoring system making slight adjustments in order to once again allow the league MVP race to be more even, while also making the top players less touchdown dependent. At the end of the 2023 season I put it to vote and the league chose to adopt the new scoring system:

  • Passing: 1 point for every 25 yards, 3 points for every TD, -1 for every Int
  • Rushing/Receiving: 1 point for every 10 yards, 6 points for every TD, 0.5 per reception, -2 for every fumble lost
  • Kicking and defense are very similar to the modern scoring, just dialed down a little

From here on you’ll see the current teams in the league and you can access their rosters by clicking on the team name. You’ll also eventually see a draft board from this year, the standings that will be regularly updated as the season progresses, a link to the weekly Recap, and toward the bottom is our list of championship games, MVPs and other various award winners. I hope you enjoy following how things are going for us, as much as we love playing the game.

The Teams

I commissioned a friend of mine to create logos for each team in the league (except ay_Bilat) and he did a fantastic job. His name is Luke Persons, his Instagram handle is luke_persons, you should go check out some of his work.

Awards

Note: In order to have a weekly point total added to a player's season point total the player has to be in the starting lineup. I point this out because there may have been players that scored higher in a single season that didn’t win MVP or OROY in our league, it’s probably because they didn’t start all 13 games (14 from 2021 on)
**We did IDP only for the 2022 season. And the scoring system went more modern starting in 2024.**

League Trophy

We purchase our trophy from Decade Awards. We haven’t had any problems, and we love the bobblehead trophy, it makes a pretty sweet desk ornament.
